Maryland cell phone law takes effect Oct. 1 2013

NEW MOTOR VEHICLE LAW IN EFFECT!

Maryland's already strict laws regarding cell phone use while driving just got more strict - now, having the phone in your hands while driving becomes a primary offense. Starting on October 1st, law enforcement officers in Maryland have the authority to pull drivers over for talking on a cell phone without using a hands-free device. The offense was previously a secondary offense which required an officer to pull a driver over for something else before issuing a citation for improper use of a cell phone.

Drivers will be fined $83 including court cost for their first offense, with the penalty increasing with each subsequent citation.
